Gradient

Gradient or slope is a graded change in the magnitude of some physical quantity or dimension. It is a number that measures its “steepness”, usually denoted by the letter m. It is the change in y for a unit change in x along the line.

The value of the derivative at a point is equal to the gradient of the tangent at that point.

The gradient of the tangent at any point, is given by  f ’(x), i.e. 4 – 2x. So the gradient at the point (1, 3) is  and the gradient at (3, 3) is  .
