Amplitude

Amplitude (Angular amplitude) is the maximum displacement of a pendulum bob. During the oscillation, the maximum displacement from its mean position is called amplitude.

The maximum displacement of a periodic wave. It is the height of a crest or the depth of a trough measured from the undisturbed position of what is carrying the wave.

For a simple periodic wave, the amplitude is the same on either sides of the rest position. As a wave travels through a medium, its amplitude usually decreases because some of its energy is being lost to friction. If no energy were required to overcome friction, there would be no decrease in amplitude and the wave would be called: ‘ideal wave’. As a rule to make analysis easier, we will assume that the waves we are examining are ideal waves.
