About Course

In Coordinate geometry for grade 11, you will expect to handle lines and points as well as the related calculations. It is important for you to keep your accurate geometrical instruments close.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this chapter you should be able to:

  • Calculate the length of a straight line
  • Calculate the mid-point of two points
  • Calculate the gradient of a line segment
  • Find the equation of a straight line
  • Find the gradients of parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Use gradients of parallel and perpendicular lines to find equations

Expected Knowledge in Coordinate Geometry

  • Length (distance formula)
  • Mid-point
  • Gradient
  • Gradient point form
  • Gradient Intercept form
  • Double intercept form
  • Parallel lines
  • Perpendicular lines

SKILLS

VALUES

  • Curiosity in using distance and gradient formula.
  • Recognition of distance and gradient formula.

Remember, mathematics is a practical subject, follow the instructor and tutor’s explanations and try to implement on your own, before you try to tackle the practical exercises.

Also, don’t forget to explore the Pastpaper page for more exercise and revisions

Course Content

Concept of Coordinates
This is a system of geometry where the position of points on the plane is described using an ordered pair of numbers. Recall that a plane is a flat surface that goes on forever in both directions. If we were to place a point on the plane, coordinate geometry gives us a way to describe exactly where it is by using two numbers.

LENGTH AND MIDPOINT OF A STRAIGHT LINE
The distance between two points Midpoint formula

EQUATION OF A STRAIGHT LINE
DEFINITION THE EQUATION OF A LINE THROUGH THE ORIGIN WITH A GIVEN GRADIENT THE Y-INTERCEPT OF A LINE THE EQUATION OF A STRAIGHT LINE WITH GIVEN GRADIENT, PASSING THROUGH A GIVEN POINT THE EQUATION OF A STRAIGHT LINE THROUGH TWO GIVEN POINTS

GRADIENT OF PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR LINES
Generally, Parallel lines have the same gradient” the gradient of the perpendicular line is: a1 = -1/2
