#InformationandCommunicationTechnology #ICT #Education Information Technology is the term used to cover a whole range of hardware and software. Information Technology (IT) system processes, stores, and/or transfers (communicates) information. IT merges computing with high-speed communications links carrying data, sound and video. Examples include personal computers (PC), telephones, television and various handheld devices. Computers and communications are the pivots of Information Technology (IT). To transfer information, Information Technology (IT) systems use computers, telecommunications networks, and other electronic devices. In 1992, with the increase in e-mail use, the term ICT or ‘Information and communication Technology’, was coined to replace IT, which includes all internet services, technology equipment and services, media and broadcasting, network-based information services and all other information and communication activities. ICT could then be seen as the combination of networks, hardware and software as well as the means of communication, collaboration and engagement that enable the processing, management and exchange of data, information and knowledge. The basis of ICT, is simply to help improve the way we deal with information in all areas of life. In the context of the school curriculum, the term Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is used to refer to a range of tools and techniques relating to computer-based hardware, to communi¬cations including both directed and broadcast, to information sources such as CD-ROM and the internet, and to associated technologies such as robots, videoconferencing and digital TV. This is an all embracing description. It marries both the old Information Technology to the new innovation made possible by communication process to enhance effective information and communication network. The development in technology has turned the world into a global village and information is now being processed at very fast speed with highly sophisticated equipment. Through ICT, the whole world is reduced to a unit and any part of the world could be reached in a fraction of second. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is vital to human development. It offers a wide range tools that leads to the change of the teaching process from one closed and rigid, oriented on teacher, to an inciting and interactive educational process centered on learners. It accounts for why the world is categorized into developed, developing and under-developed. Access to ICT and utilization of its benefits place some nations above the others. While developed nations are breaking new grounds in terms of technological development, as a result of developed ICT, developing and under-developed nations are grappling with the crumbs of technology.
